Accounting Research Paper Ideas
Writing an accounting research paper can be hard work; it takes research, planning and attention to detail. Before you get to this stage, though, you might have an even bigger challenge; finding something to write about. Of course you might have been assigned a subject, but if not you’re going to have to come up with one yourself. If you’re finding it difficult here are a few ideas.
- Financial options counselling. Many people don’t have much knowledge of financial matters and might not be using their money efficiently. Look at how people come by their knowledge of finance and investment opportunities and what part accountants play in the process. Investigate ways that accountants can offer personalised counselling to potential clients and what the benefits will be. Discuss the potential for offering personal finance classes for those who don’t have money to invest but may be able to save on taxes and other costs.
- Recession recovery. Economies run in cycles and, as everyone is currently too well aware, recession is part of that cycle. Look into what causes recessions and what the best way to recover from one is. There are plenty of historical examples to compare and analyze and numerical data is easily available. Also look at ways individuals can protect their investments during a recession and how accountants can help them with this.
- Credit rating repair. Many people have suffered damage to their credit ratings as a result of the recent recession. Unfortunately a credit record can be difficult to repair once issues have emerged. Look at ways the rating can be improved and analyse the benefits and drawbacks of each. Examine ways of restructuring personal finances to avoid problems in the future.
- Auditing procedures. A major part of accountancy is auditing. Outline the basic process and look at ways it is applied by major businesses and government agencies. Identify weaknesses in the process and explain their implications. Then suggest improvements and detail what the results would be of implementing them.
Depending on the level of your paper you might want to use one of these ideas as a general topic, or break it down and cover one aspect in more detail. Whatever you do, there is plenty reference material available online, in textbooks and perhaps most usefully in professional journals. A big advantage of journals is that they often contain new ideas that attract a degree of controversy, which means a lot of potential for exploring issues and suggesting alternatives.
