Finding Great Research Paper Topics For College
The success or failure of a research paper at college level can be traced back to the topic on which it was based. There are probably just as many good topics as there are bad ones and with practice you will steer yourself in the right direction without any conscious thought. To help you while you hone that skill, here are a few tips to consider and topics that are examples of them.
- Stay current
- Get historical
- Get fictional
- Cross Disciplines
Boredom is an illusion when the world is as full of fascinating news as it is now. New planets are being discovered, new political alliances are being forged and old ones broken. Advances in robotics or biotechnology can fill volumes of books by themselves. Take a look at the latest news and see what comes to mind. The topic, “Global Marijuana Prohibition: Countdown to the End”fits this profile.
If you want to leave all speculation out of your research, you can focus on areas where the conflict has already been solved or the questions answered. Check the history books and you will find several examples of these to refer to and as a bonus, there will already be a well researched accepted theory behind them. Whether you choose to agree with it or not is your choice but it helps remove some of the uncertainty. You could try a topic like, “Scotland: The Country that Should have Been” for starters.
Academic study is far more open to careful analysis of both old and new fiction than in previous generations. It is possible to base a very strong research paper on either of the following topics, “How close are we to Intergalactic Travel?” or “Marxism and the Potential Uprising of an Artificially Intelligent Underclass”.
Many great discoveries have been made by people who are not based within a field. This is because they are less steeped in the traditions of the field and can recognise unlikely connections much faster as a result. By taking elements from the field you know best and applying them to other fields you can create a unique topic that is thought provoking and results in groundbreaking research. For example, “The Gamification of Basic Mental Health Care”.
If you have difficulty doing this on your own, invite a few friends for a brainstorming activity. You will benefit from combined brainpower and the work will be completed much more easily.
